Tips on scanning photos and negatives

You can take your photographs and negatives to a digital camera store or Kinkos to be scanned.

Scanning your photographs
- ALWAYS remove the photo from the frame and mat boards.
- ALWAYS use a very soft brush or clean lint-free cloth to remove surface dust.
- ALWAYS scan in COLOR even Black & White photos.
- ALWAYS scan at 16 bits resolution or higher.
- ALWAYS scan at 300 to 600 dpi.
- ALWAYS disable all scanner photo processing features such as Enhancement, Color Restoration, Contrast Correction or ICE.
- ALWAYS save the file as JPEG100 or Uncompressed JPEG. If there is a quality setting use 100 or Maximum.
- ALWAYS save a copy of the JPEG file on CDR or DVD.
- ALWAYS make sure that your email system does not automatically compress photographs that you email.
Scanning Slides and Negatives
The greatest majority of Home and Office scanners use Reflection and cannot be used to scan negatives and slides.
This is because the scanning light must pass through the negative or slide to a sensor on the opposite side of the item. Unless you own a film scanner, you must either use a digital camera store or a specialized scanning service such as Kinkos. However, the best way is to mail your slides and negatives to Blue Dog Digital Imaging where you can be assured of the very best handling and scanning possible.
- ALWAYS avoid handling your negatives and slides whenever possible.
- ALWAYS hold negatives and slides by the edges.
- NEVER attempt to clean or dust negatives and slides. Trust a professional!
- ALWAYS scan at 16 bits resolution or higher.
- ALWAYS scan at 1200 dpi.
- ALWAYS disable all scanner photo processing features such as Enhancement, Color Restoration, Contrast Correction or ICE.
- ALWAYS save the file as JPEG100 or Uncompressed JPEG. If there is a quality setting use 100 or Maximum.
- ALWAYS save a copy of the JPEG file on CDR or DVD.
- ALWAYS make sure that your email system does not automatically compress photographs that you email.
- When Mailing slides and negatives, ALWAYS use the original envelope, visine holder, or box that you received from the photo processor.
