Photo Retouching is the process of making subtle changes to a photograph to correct imperfections or slightly alter reality in the lighting, background or subject of a photograph. Nearly every photo seen in magazines or advertisements has been retouched to some degree. Professional photographs of models, people, and weddings are commonly retouched to eliminate minor skin blemishes, soften crows feet and other wrinkles, soften shadows, remove a five o'clock shadow on a man's face, and enhance or change eye color.

Photo Alteration is the process of making significant changes to a photograph that changes reality as captured in the photo. Many photographs used in advertising are altered and those alterations may be readily identifiable, like when a real person is placed in fantasy surroundings, or quite subtle, like when two separate photographs are combined in such a manner as to make the resulting image appear completely real.
